IMarEST awards £500 student bursary sailing cargo vessel

The IMarEST has awarded a £500 student bursary to Ville Lindén, who is in his third year of studying for a BEng (Hons) Yacht and Powercraft Design at Southampton Solent University and is conducting research into designing a wooden cargo schooner for sustainable trading initiatives.

Ville is in the process of doing a preliminary design of a 70ft wooden sailing cargo vessel, aimed at benefiting developing coastal communities, with high emphasis on sustainability and low emissions on all aspects of the intended construction and operation methods/scenarios for the vessel. The vessel design depends on wood samples that Ville has had to ship from Costa Rica. He has milled and glued together the laminated sample pieces and is testing their mechanical properties at the Southampton Solent University's materials testing lab.

He will be spending February, March and April refining the vessel’s design and analysing the data collected to see if the laminated timber could be beneficial on this kind of vessel, both from structural integrity and sustainability point of view.

"The IMarEST student bursary is very much appreciated and greatly received as it helps me to compensate the cost inccurred on my undergraduate research, that’s dealing with the application of exotic timber species in boat-building and impact of this on sustainability of wooden boat-building in general. Besides the material support, this kind of acknowledgement received from an institution like the IMarEST is also hugely empowering, and motivates me to continue on the path I’ve chosen in order to take my research and budding career in maritime engineering/boat design further. It is truly an honour to be able to be part of this great community of people working and studying on maritime sector and I would strongly endorse the IMarEST’s support and advice to its present and future members. Many thanks indeed!'', Ville Lindén, student bursary recipient.
